I am currently half-way through a remove old glass and replace project, and especially if you only have an outside workplace, I would like to sound a few words of caution.

1. When the old glass is off, the wood starts to absorb moisture or dry out, unless your humidity and temperature are exactly what they were when the boat was glassed. I know it will be still glassed on the inside, but the wood can crack and split if it shrinks, or buckle flatter areas if it expands. Especially as you already have a crack on the deck, this could easily become a major split if the wood shrinks (lower humidity).

2. You will need to do a LOT of sanding to get down to bare wood everywhere (after stripping off the old glass, patchy epoxy is left on the wood). If you don't sand down to bare wood the colour won't match. K1s were built for lightness - be careful you have enough wood thickness for sanding. I reckon I took over 1mm (1/16) off at a minimum.

3. To try and be helpful as well, I found that a heat gun set on 350C/660F was just right (gets the epoxy soft and doesn't burn the wood), and a palette knife was perfect. Wear heavy leather gloves, hold the heat gun and the partially removed glass in one hand and the palette knife in the other, pull hard and heat at the same time while easing the knife along.

Let us know how it goes!

Justin
