When I build a boat I have an 8 ft 2 x 4 shelf on each side of my horses so I can lay tools on it and I made a few small jugs that hold a strip so I can easily apply glue to the edge. I work flat edge, so I usually run a pass of the hand plane on the edges anyhow.

If you had a shelf and ran a table saw cut down it length-wise so it would hold a strip on edge, you could plane it flat and tapered in 20 seconds or so. You have to do that anyhow. So before you try to over-correct the problem, start building and let the solution come out of the building process.
