I want to either apply tinted Schooner varnish or paint to the hull. Any help on what tint or paint to use and application greatly appreciated. I haven't found any info in the forum search I can use.

The paint can be as simple as a one-part topside paint to a full automotive treatment. Any kind of paint will show more flaws in the surface than a wood surface.

Single component marine paints (ie Interlux Brightsides) are fairly cheap, pretty rugged and are easy to apply. I usually apply them with a combination of roller and brush (roll and tip method). I used Brightsides on my daughter's SOF:

Two-component marine paints (ie Interlux Perfection) are more expensive and slightly trickier to apply but are much tougher. They also need fewer coats and dry quicker so you can get on the water quicker. I also roll and tip these.

For my commercial kayaks I paint them with an automotive refinish system (epoxy primer, sealer, color and urethane clear coats). The finish quality and gloss are tough to beat. You also get a nearly unlimited range of colors and effects (pearls, metallics, etc). Plus all the coats can be applied in as little as a day and a half. Biggest downside, besides cost, is they must be sprayed. If you can't do it outside then you need a professional spray booth.

On the sectional Black Pearl I used a metallic copper pearl from House of Kolor:

On Zack's "Spray" surf ski/kayak hybrid we shot it with Dupont urethane, color matched to his Toyota.
