Lee Valley tools make quite a few very thoughtfully designed tools extremely useful for boat building.

I like their apron block plane. It's smaller and lighter weight than most block planes. This makes it easier to carry around all day in your apron and its a great tool, pictured below.

They have a nice selection of pull saws.

For more information than you may wish see my "Epoxy" web page @ http://www.laughingloon.com/epoxy.html

Many first time builders overbuild, using heavy, thick woods, and too much epoxy and fiberglass, creating a heavy boat.

It's extremely nice to have a lightweight boat/board which is easy to carry and paddle. To build a lightweight board you must think about how to keep weight low and seek out information how to build "lightly".

Mistakes are part of the learning process. Creating "Test" pieces is a way to see how your ideas will work without messing up you final project. If you haven't worked with wood strips, epoxy and fiberglass before I'd highly recommend making a few test panels of strips of different thicknesses, with different woods and sanding and glassing them. You will learn a lot.

Have Fun,
Rob
