Discussions like this abounded in the sailing cruising discussions; not so much in paddling. Most of the proponents of 'chuck it all and go cruising' turned out to have a comfortable income flow - sometimes earned but often inherited.
It is true that you can't buy extra years of life, but worry about illness and financial disaster is not very relaxing either. Folks for whom the idea of bankruptcy or loss of home caused by a medical condition is a strange notion (e.g. Europeans and Canadians) live in an 'alternate reality'.
