I designed the kayak using "Kayak Foundry" from the Blue Heron Kayaks website.
www.blueheronkayaks.com

There are more details and photos about this kayak and some others i have designed and built in the forum there. My username there is anewhouse.

There is a bit of a story attached to how I came to design this kayak.

I found out about 20 years ago that I wasn't good enough to cope with a competitive racing K1. I tried for about six months and while I could often manage an hour without falling out, I could never paddle faster over a distance than I could in a slower TK1.

A few years ago, I designed and built a TK1 similar to the one I had paddled for quite a few years back in the 80s and 90s. My best speed over an hour was tantalisingly close to 10km/h, so I designed a slightly faster K1 with enough stability that I could relax a bit while paddling instead of continually worrying about balance. On a good day, I could manage to cover the magic 10km in an hour.

I was tempted to try something slightly faster, so I designed this one. I built a 4.2 metre child's version more or less as a prototype for this one. It seemed to work, looked good and didn't present any problems with construction, so I went ahead with this one.

A lot of modern kayaks and ocean racing skis have that cutaway at the catch, so I thought I would incorporate that into the design.

Once a kayak reaches this level of performance, you have to sacrifice a huge amount of stability to gain a tinyl improvement in performance. On paper, this one has only about two thirds the righting moment of the old one and should be about one to one and a half percent faster. That mightn't seem much, but over a 20km race, that could gain me almost a couple of minutes, provided I can paddle it confidently.:)
