A really unstable boat may not allow a paddler to stay upright at full power, and over any meaningful distance it may be faster to be in a slower kayak.

You don't even have to fall out to make a fast kayak slow.:)

I discovered that a couple of decades ago when I tried for about six months to learn to paddle a K1. In a very short sprint, I could make it go faster than my slower TK1, but over 10km, I could never beat the time I did in the TK1.

I saw exactly the same thing a couple of weeks ago. I have built a junior K1 which is 4.2 metres long, the same as a Vajda Mini Sonic. An 11 year old girl who is still fairly new to kayaking did a lap in the Mini Sonic and two laps in my junior K1. The Mini Sonic is a much less stable kayak and undoubtedly slightly faster, but her times were better in my design.

A faster kayak doesn't mean a quicker time. :)

My current K1 is probably somewhere between 3% and 5% slower than the one I had about 25 years ago, but even though I am obviously about 25 years older, I can manage better speeds in my design than I could in the less stable K1.

My new one with the cutaway should be slightly faster. While it still has an enormous amount of stability for a K1, the big test will be whether I can paddle it confidently enough to get the advantage of the slightly faster design.

I should find that out in a week or so. The launch date has been delayed slightly by my decision to make a wooden seat for it instead of the fibreglass seat I made for the old K1.
