It is to keep the stations from moving whilst the first few hull strips are fixed in place either way.

Once the forms are aligned, I always staple on a few temporary 'stabilizing' strips (somewhat diagonally) before starting to build. They don't have to be full-length - I always seem to have some broken and off-thickness scraps that do the job, or I quickly rip some strips from a scrap 1x board.
