Etienne and Ancient, thanks for your responses. The fourteen foot kayak you linked to is nice, but I definitely want something a bit smaller. Right now my son is 5 years old and 48lbs, and i am thinking of a boat that will be good for about 3-4 more years. At that time a larger boat like that will be under consideration, but then again, lots of plans out there for boats in that size range.

Ancient, I thought of a small canoe, and have several plans for various designs, but he definitely wants a kayak, and personally, I just feel like building one! I might end up just going ahead and building IO, but he might only get a 1-2 years out of it. Wish it was just a bit bigger. Still, I could knock one out in a weekend or two, and keep planning and researching building something bigger later on.
