Thanks for the advice and the compliments on the seat. I started with a 6" disc sander that needed very careful handling to ensure there were no serious gouges put in by accident. Then I worked through the grits from 80 to 120 and finished with 180. I found that the sanding needed to be done in one direction only or the edges of the paper would also dig in. There was a lot of trial and error (sitting in the thing on the shed floor) to get it to this stage. The underside has also been shaped to the hull of the kayak.
