I did the same thing on an 11" catamaran row boat.
The only place I went was in circles.
Added 1 1/4" of depth on the bow and stern and it went straight with only a little correction occasionally.

You will get a lot more "effective" resistance if you are not going straight.

I hope you do not make the same mistake.

Sailboats seem to go pretty well, even though they have a bow wave. It is not a good comparison since they don't move by muscle power.
