Does this model require a external strong back

In theory, no. The panels could be stitched together and the panels would define the shape. I HIGHLY recommend using an external strongback with female forms. They keep the panels perfectly aligned during the entire build.

The height of the fore deck can be adjusted by the builder (plus/minus an inch or so). The external forms are helpful in holding the shape of the hull while the deck is formed and installed. For instance, I clamped the deck to the hull by screwing scraps of wood to the tops of the forms.
