Last week I launched my new Black Pearl. This is the first kayak that I have built for myself in about 8 years. I named her "Areia," the Spartan name for the Greek goddess Aphrodite who was symbolized by the metal copper. I later found it it also means "sand" in Portuguese. It's painted in "House of Kolor" copper pearl automotive paint with urethane clear coats. It's an okoume plywood version of the strip design. It's also a 5-piece sectional.

I believe it's the first "official" plywood Black Pearl in North America and the first sectional Black Pearl... in the world.

Of the five standard sizes it is the "M" Size: 546 x 48 cm (17'-9" x 19"). The inside measurements for the decks are 13 and 23 cm (5.11" and 9"). The hull and aft deck are 4mm okoume. The fore deck is 3mm.

Final weight is about 35 lbs (15.9 kg). Turning it into a sectional added approximately 3 lbs (1.36 kg) of weight (the 18 stainless bolts weigh almost a pound).
