Hi Jennifer-

I see that John recommended Ted Moores' book. I wanted to let you know that he did an article for Epoxyworks on his system of wetout which you can find here: http://www.epoxyworks.com/16/index16.html I used this and found that the whole "pounding in the epoxy" with a brush just introduced a lot of bubbles that actually weren't too visible until I sanded and opened them up, creating pinholes.

I think that one of the things that adds weight is using cheap fiberglass with huge open weaves. Epoxy is heavy, and if you have to fill a huge open weave in 4 oz cloth it will end up heavier than tight weave 4 oz, because it will take more epoxy to fill the voids in the fabric's weave. Thayercraft http://thayercraft.com/ carries a huge range of fiberglass of all weights and weaves, and as an alternative to Ted Moores' method they have one on their page. It's good info, but take it with a grain of salt since they're talking about laminating smaller things than a kayak.

I'm sure you're also aware of all of the videos of the construction process on the Guillemot Kayaks web page, right?
