Re-entry after a swim is what I expect from my canoe. it's a solo, sit-on-the-bottom, double paddle type, known in some circles as a lost-pond boat. For that I plan to use a large-bore syphon with an inflatable cushion at the far end - it's only 20# - then once empty I will try a heavy-duty paddle with either an air-bag or water bucket, and also a stirrup. If/when I can make that work I will adapt a telescopic pole for the job so I can return to using my best paddle. The pole may also simplify exiting at the beach . . .

The only kayak I use these days is a short, fat plastic one, 30+ inch waterline beam - unbelievably stable. We're not talking sea-kayak here or anything remotely like it, it's a tub, my beginner's boat and it's frankly hard to imagine what could knock it over without knocking me unconscious, but I need to be prepared. If it goes over I expect the PFD will keep it on its side so I can brace back up, but the cockpit is wide so it may be full by then. It's not amenable to cowbot re-entry, too high near the cockpit and it's so short that the stern just ducks out from under.

So once the water warms up it's going to be practice and experiment. Not long now, the pool is up to a balmy 50F! I live in a small town with no kayaking club, the streams and ponds here are shallow enough that re-entry consists of standing up, cussing, emptying the boat and getting back in. There is one on a decent size lake about an hour away but as far as I know they do not have access to a pool so it will be some time before they are giving lessons, if at all.

Once again, thanks for all the help.

I used to be able to do this stuff but having spent the last couple of years "dry" due to illness and treatment I know very well I need a new approach. When you athletic types get into your 70's you'll better understand the challenges of the geriatric paddler . . .
