Wet re-entry and roll

When it's all said and done, the roll is the most reliable and perhaps, easiest on the body, physically. There's no doubt that we all become "swimmers" at some point. (There's an old saying (around here at least) that as kayakers we are simply "between swims"). And if you can come up right away, then that is well and good. But sometimes there are instances where coming right back up might not be an option. Then you must do a wet exit. The trick now is getting back into the boat. In which case, I'd still prefer to do a roll - which is preceded immediately by a wet re-entry. With a re-entry and roll, there's no need to try and balance and pull yourself into tippy boat that is probably being buffeted by wind/waves (most likely the main reason why you are in the water).

I think you will find that the physical effort of getting back into an upright boat is a lot more than doing a basic re-entry and roll. The standard Greenland roll is probably the most powerful roll yet, when done properly, is very easy on the body. It's not the quick (and almost violent) action of the C to C or other rolls associated with the Euro blades. It is a slow and deliberate movement.

Also, a re-entry and roll requires no extra equipment. No need to carry floats, straps or any other devices. It's also a very quick way to get back upright - which could very well be a life-saver if the water is cold enough.

The only downside to the re-entry and roll is that you end up with a boat full of water that needs to be pumped out.

Just my opinion,

Sean
