I agree with Dan. If you want something that will absorb shock and allow the hull to flex, you need to use a compressible material that will return to its original shape. Wood won't do that when it's attached rigidly on all sides, so foam is the answer. If you don't like the idea of a full foam bulkhead, you can make an undersize wood/glass bulkhead fitted with a 1' band of foam around the edges. Foam can be coated with "Tool Dip" type products if you want a different color than the typical gray (such as black).
