No doubt we've all read about Russell Crowe's recent request for assistance from the USGS off Long Island. After his initial error (wound up on a beach in the dark conditions worsening) seems like he did the right thing. He got in a situation and landed, the Coast Guard passed by, he signaled for help. Didn't say what he would have done had they not passed by, maybe hike up the beach and call a cab? Press photo is interesting, he's as wooly as Dubside.

The New York Times has an article we can all benefit from: How to manage your yacht expenses. 36 foot Morris sail boat: $450k. That's more than I thought 36 feet would cost (but I thought it would take me three weeks to make a Great Auk).
Satellite internet access $5k a month--buts hey, that's unlimited access...... Fuel costs for 30,000 gallons?
The way I (and probably most of us do it): Let's see at 20 mpg, that's 3 gallons per trip to the put in and back...... if I paddle twice a week, that's about 100 years of kayaking, none of the fuel in my boat. If you take your 80' cruiser to Germany for annual repairs though..... you'll have to top off at Bermuda, and maybe the Azores.
