Strip: How Big is Your Skeg?

I want to build a skeg for my Guillemot L, similar to Mike Trutwin's.

I believe I can get good access from the rear hatch, if I place it about 4'6" from the stern. How long should it be to get reasonable control? It seems to me about 8" extending down at about a 45 degree angle should be adequate for most purposes, however some of the pictures I have seen on this forum depict a skeg that is much longer. Any thoughts?
