I'm glad you posted that because the rip fence is a misunderstood concept especially with strip builders.
Many years back, Norm Abrams on "New Yankee Workshop" often used a half fence as on the video. I think the full fence is there because primarily it has to be attached to both ends of the table and it works good for ripping a wider sheet of plywood. Assuming a long fence is needed to rip a long board is actually counter to what is really happening.
