Good point. Using a wide featherboard not only covers the blade, giving some protectionto fingers, but it can also cover the output side, too.

Even if the blade is 10" in diamaeter, you won't get 10" of exposure on the top of the table. Maybe 3 to 5 inches will be exposed, depending on how high you raise the blade above the table. You can cover most or all of that with a featherboard made from a nominal 1x6.

Illustration below should give an idea of how that works.
