I followed Brian Schulz's method outlined here:

using latigo leather straps from McMaster-Carr:

That link is for 3/16" diameter. You can get other diameters and I can't rermember what I used now. I think 3/16 is about right.
This stuff is very tough, has so far held up very well, and should be good for towing.
