Hi Doug,
I use the full loop idea for the end loops. I use kinda fisherman's bend, the right side around the left and vice versa. These slip toward each other with tension and lock against each other. If the bends are long enough it gives a good handle on the loop.

For hanging onto the kayak, perimeter lines are better.
