I used to use just foam brushes, but found that foam roller (those that look like hot dogs) and tip off with foam brush to be much more effective and quicker. You can put the roller and foam brush wrapped in saran wrap into the freezer to re-use it. To build up quick coats, I use Epiphanes Rapid Clear which does not require sanding between coats and can be re-done in about 5 hours at room temp. This way I can get 6 coats on one side in two days, let it dry several days and then sand the boat with wet paper up to 400 and then add a few coats of high gloss with sanding between coats. But in my case, time is money. I can't spend three to four weeks getting 6 coats of varnish on a customers boat. Of course spraying is faster.
