: Do you have a technique for applying spar varnish to the hull
: without it running? Due to the vertical nature of the hull as it
: sits in a sling, I cannot eliminate the runs. I thought about
: spraying, but I'm not sure that works for spar varnish. How do
: you do it?

: In the past I have varnished the deck, then turned over and done
: the hull. The bow and stern have very vertical sides as it sits
: there - thus the running of the varnish.

: Any ideas would be appreciated.

#1 most common finishing problem - drips and runs.

ANSWER TO THIS PROBLEM

Apply MUCH less finish. Start DRIER and add a bit more with each new coat until you learn just how much
finish to pick up with your brush without drips and runs appearing on a vertical surface.

AND apply in a cross hatch pattern to even out the finish. Work on an area of about 16 square inches.

First stoke starts at the top of your boat parallel to the strips. The brush is fully loaded with the first stroke and dumps
the most liquid. Keep stoking down to the sheer.

THEN stroke from TOP to BOTTOM to bring down the heavy load of finish from the first stroke down the hull.

FINISH by stroking horizontally again from top to bottom to totally even out the amount of finish applied.

Make sure you have covered every spot and overlapped the previous area by looking for the
reflection of your shop lights in the new wet surface.

Everybody is in a hurry when they're close to the end of a long project. They want to put on a couple quick and thick
coats, because their brain already says "we're getting in the boat to paddle it already!"

A great finish can make your boat and all the work you've done look much better.

Good Luck!

Rob
