Varnish is not epoxy. You must work fast.

Some varnishes and finishes create a film very quickly that will show brush strokes if disturbed,
so you must know exactly how long you can work a surface and maintain a "wet edge" that will melt
into a perfect glossy surface. The marine spar varnish surface does seem to "melt" into itself.

Switching from a roller to brush must be timed right to make it work.

I like a brush. I have no reason to consider a roller since I have excellent results with a brush.

If I were varnishing a 50 foot boat I might have reason to consider a roller.

When I varnish my hull bottom I start along the keel line and work down each side overlapping
one side to the other along the keel line.

All the best,
Rob
