Ian, that's the kind of thinking I like to see!

I do the same thing when laminating coaming rim lips. Early in my boat building "career" I saw a kayak so wonderfully done it raised the bar for me on the spot, and peeking under the coaming rim and seeing the clean installation was a big part of it. I'm a big believe in details, and this is a great one to feature in my book.

I'm not going to say how many boats I built before I started doing it this way, though. Your first build, huh? Dude, that's awesome!
