Hi Malcolm,
I never lift a kayak by the toggles, I do use them to stabilise my grip when I pick up by gripping the hull itself. That's only if there's two lifting. Putting in and getting out, I lift by the cockpit onto my shoulder.
Recently, I've only seen rigid handles on some models of whitewater or playboats, not on seakayaks though.
