Thanks everyone for your replies. I'm quite thrilled to have gotten input from many of the builders/designers I admire!

I'll take all this great advice with me as I move forward. I think I'll go for it, (the Redwood strips) but a quick call to the epoxy manufacturer and extra care and thought when incorporating them seems like a good move.

Nick, thanks for the extra details on your reasons for not recommending this particular species. I guess if such a failure does occur, it'll be as good an excuse as any to build another kayak :)
