: First post in a long time.

: I have completed a Great Auk and a Guillemot, used for day trips
: and some camping by my wife and myself.

: I'd like a small open canoe for tooling around calm water and
: fishing. I'n a 225 pound 6'2" paddler, so I can't go too
: tiny. There's a 3 three year old grandaughter too, so good
: initial stability is needed.

: So far I've looked at the WCHA plan list, several websites, and I'm
: thinking of Rob Roy or Wee Lassie style canoes in the 11-13 foot
: range. I also have come into a pretty good stock of beautiful
: clear, straight grained redwood reclaimed from a deck that was
: removed from my parent's house. I'm thinking 3/16 redwood strips
: and simple details to keep the boat light.

: Please give me any feedback on particular designs or experiences
: you've had. It will be good to take on another project.

: Thanks

The Wee Lassie would have to be stretched to at least 13.5-14 ft to handle your weight, or if you scaled the boat up 10% in all 3 dimensions that would bring it to about 11.5 ft. Personally I think that would make it a bit too beamy; 5% added to width and depth with length stretched to 12 ft would give extra stability for your height, and accommodate your weight. I haven't built a WL yet, but when I do I will raise the sheer at the bow and lower it at the stern by about an inch to reduce weathercocking. I will also give it another inch of rocker, as it has been reported to be more difficult to turn than it might be: the original was designed for lakes so is meant to run straight but I want a boat for streams and rivers. Never be afraid to experiment to get what you need!
