Whether you are building for 1 kayak or 6 with gear the total load is fairly small. In order to give your boats a smooth, safe ride the suspension has to be compliant to that load. If the suspension doesn't compress enough on the bumps the whole thing could get airborn at speed and shake the tar out of your stuff. Sometime back a guy converted a 4X4 Harbor Freight trailer into a 4 kayak hauler. Even with a full load of boats and gear the double leaf springs were too stiff.
On a top of the line aluminum kayak trailer they have small motorcyle wheels, trailing arms and properly sized motorcycle spring/shock absorber units.
