Skin-on-Frame: coaming bending advice

I have an eight foot piece of clear WRC that measures 1/2" x 2-1/2" that I want to bend for the cockpit hoop. I know, 2.5" is pretty tall for a cockpit coaming. I want the extra for possible shaping before installing. What is the optimal height for a coaming with a wood rim added later?

My question is this: is 1/2" too thick for bending around the form? I can plane it if necessary, what is the optimum thickness for bending clear red cedar?

This is the last structural piece before I skin it... it's getting closer to splash time.

thanks,

Michael
