think about a T-bar, flatside down. the web gives space and lashing points for the deck ridges. could be aluminum or wood fabrication.

I guess you guys are talking about very special purpose low volume boats. There are dozens of high volume type boats that don't restrict entry, they facilitate it in fact. Not an option?
