The stiffness of a beam is proportional to the width times the cube of the height.
So a single layer of half ply cut 1" tall would be .5x1x1x1
2 layers of ply cut to .79" (1x.79x.79.x.79) would be equal stiffness
3 layers (1.5x.69x.69x.69)

This doesn't consider any strength lost due to cutting the grain short or the corners.

The wider surface might be more comfortable on your thigh.
