sort of kidding here, but using the above approach, but use epoxy to glue the strips tight to the original surface as well as each other, sand and glass the new outside.

As the inside is sorta punky, heatstrip off the inside glass and scour, peel just the inner wood plies up and leave the old outer glass in place as the now inner glass.

sure won't save time, but a few bucks for glass if yr careful? heh heh
