Check out Nick Schade's books, library at first will do, but evetually you'll want to own them. Ted Moores' books are excellent too. Both authors include plans or tables of offsets in their books for a number of designs, and there are plenty of references for other plans in the appendixes. This site also is a wonderful resource for designs.

Build the boat you want, don't settle for anything less, no matter how daunting the build might seem from the design perspective, or your paddling experience. Both will be improved as you practice.

As for your expedition plans, there are so many options out there for the wilderness experience. Paddling around some of those Indoneasian islands might be so much easier given the possibilities for taking the ferry from the mainland or even hiring a fisherman's boat to shuttle you around from island to island, then you could set up a base camp and take day trips around the island you are on or to others near by...the bottom line is that the boat you paddle doesn't neccessarily need to be big enough to carry all your gear.

The sky's the limit, so go for broke! I guess the other thing to consider is that this boat you plan to build now, might only be the first of many, just like the surfers have different boards for different conditions...
