I am so taken with the success of the artists oil paint used as tinting for varnish, that I have stripped the Aleutian paddle and am re painting it.

I used machinery to strip the old colouring off and spoilt a few of the subtle shapes of the Aleutian, but at least I will not be totally ashamed of it as I was before. [ Last week I got so fed up I threw a "wobbly" and slobbered on varnish all over. It was a disaster. Chucked the paddle in the corner of the garage!]

Black is quite solid but needs a second coat to really be opaque.

Red is transparent and even after two coats retains some of that transparency. But i suppose the mix ratios could alter that. I was very hit and miss and mixed it until it looked OK!

If I do another i will increase the amount of red, though i quite like the wood showing through a little.

My other colouring project is an Aleutian dart and that looks to be coming up OK.

: Thanks Jim,

: By "Paste Pigment" do you mean artists oil paints that are in a a
: tube? Or is it a different product?

: Does it give full opaque colouring or is it translucent?

: It is a great hint both the pigment and the colour separation. Thank you

: I once used "super glue" applied with a pen nib (old fashioned
: type.) It separated the paint colours but did not accept the paint, so i
: had a Line between the colours. Good idea... failed! :(

: While I am on about superglue; its a bit off topic, but i make sewing
: implements, crochet hooks and tatting shuttles etc.. With those two
: products I let superglue soak into the bare wood to smooth and harden the
: "working" ends. I think it would work if I applied it to the
: ends of paddles to harden them?
