Large keyhole cockpits are anything but a necessity. I personally don't like them and all of my boats have small "ocean" cockpits. You can make the opening as small as you want, then have a spray skirt or akuilisaq made to fit it. You'll still need a coaming, but there's no realistic way to get around that.
