: I thought I had a good way to do this but it didn't work out. I held my
: original walnut strip in-place with screws and later re-bored the wholes
: to 3/8" diameter. Then using a plug cutter I cut 3/8" matching
: walnut plugs to fill the wholes. This should have worked but I had a cheap
: plug cutter and the edges of the walnut burned black which really showed
: up. With a good plug cutter this would have worked. I ended up with a home
: mixed putty that was OK but not perfect.

Hi John,
I've plugged thousands of holes and done right are really pretty but not invisible. It's nearly impossible to match the grain exactly even if you use plugs cut from the same board you cut the strips from. And slight color variations show up rather well, that aren't easy to see until the wood is finished.
Still it would be pretty and is an interesting idea.
If anyone wants to try this, suggest getting plug cutters from Jamestown Distributors, oh yeah, best cut on a drill press and order a extra wood, you'll use a bunch extra just for plugs.
