: There is another way. I've built a pair of 1' by 8' table tops with melmine
: covered particle board (Menards sells it as shelving material) with 2x4
: supports under it and cross braced also with 2x4's, the framework all
: glued together to keep it stable then screwed and glued to the top.
: Menards btw sells this material up to about 2' wide.

As usual, Bill posts sage advice. Here's what I did when I needed a strongback/table combo that would be light, stiff, and movable. It's convenient for placing tools and clamps, making them available on both sides of the boat. And it's high, to help with eyeballing everything and to cut down on stooping. Strips store between the legs, as shown. Not shown: a small cart that rolls under everything and carries tools, clamps, etc., and another roller that mounts a bench grinder and stationary sanders. I'll shoot those sometime and post. (Apologies to those who've seen this shot before, but it seemed appropriate in this thread.)
