Et's method is specifically designed for cases where the inside of the area to be repaired is inaccessible. You need to be able to push the backing piece through the hole from the outside. You can get a 4"x6" rectangle through a 2"x4" hole OK. It's harder to get a 4" circle through a 2" circular hole ;-)

If you have access to the inside then a circle would be fine, and you'd have no need of the string to pull it into position etc etc.
