Another problem associated with shipping a hardshell to other destinations
is transport and storage while there. Are you willing to store your prized
hardshell or SOF kayak atop your rental car while there ?

Though you specifically excluded folding kayaks from this scenario, it may
be the only viable solution. Shipping is much less expensive, though shipping
may be unnecessary as it can be carried as luggage aboard a plane. Transport
and storage is not an issue, as it can easily be transported inside your car
and stored in your room when not in use.

Attached are three pics, the last being the hardshell golf club transport case
that I use to wheel my folding kayaks through airports and protect the contents
from shipping mishaps. At only 32 lbs, this 17.5ft kayak is easy to carry
around in it's case, and performs like your hardshell.
