All my hollow ones have some flex to them. All the solid ones too, for that matter. I think for a walrus pull paddle Id use solid Fir, or Spruce.
If you want a stiffer hollow one, add thickness to the core strips. I just finished one with 1/2" core strips, and it feels very nice. A little heavy as it has AYC in it tho. Another option is to add thickness to the loom, but you may not want that if its uncomfortable in your hands. Ive also tried glassing the inner surface of the cap strips. This didnt add stiffness to it, but it does add strength Im sure. One came out a little heavy, but this latest is quite light. I havent recorded it yet so I cant look it up If I remember right, 725 grams?
Another thing Ive noticed about weight - there is a lot of it in water. I have a drying oven, infrared lamp powered. A week in there for a solid paddle can take 200 or more grams off it. This heavy one I referred to above lost 125 grams to water weight, and its a hollow loom.
How would you do bead and cove, with the joints at right angles?
: That's why I would use bead/cove next time. The surface area on some of those
: joints is down in the 1/16" and 1/8" range. I should be okay but
: it defanately needs glass. I was originally going to use CF but it's too
: spendy right now.
: It has a fair degree of spring; maybe 1". I will probably build another
: one and do it a little differenly.
: ... I don't think I'm going to touch that one. It's tempting though
