Chip,
I just have to say that your boat is sensational. The detail strips you've added show your high quality work (and patience). Up close and in person this kayak definately passed the 6 inch test, if not 3 or less. Great joinery. My Chesapeake deck stripping doesn't even pass the 6 foot test and yours has about a million more parts/pieces. Very nice work.

As for suggestions relating to your cockpit covering, I'd have to say "Go for it". The skin idea is certainly one that I would like to see. I even like your zip-tie option, but the brass or wood plugs may be the way to go. Are you thinking of building two or three of these drop-in decks? One for a single and another for a double? or a triple? Can't wait to see what you come up with.
