: Hello all,
: How the heck do you drill 1/8" deep holes 3/16" material without blasting through the other side? I have thought of adding additional layers of glass at the underside of the hatches so that there would be added thickness to work
with. I've also thought of chucking up a router bit in the drill press,
but that seems a little scary as well. Plunge router? Yikes...
: Just wondering how anyone else might have solved this.
I have the earth magnets installed in my two hatches on my "Cirrus" but still varnishing so have not installed the seal to test for compression yet.
I used a scrap piece of 1/4" ply which my S&G is made from, to set the stop on my shopsmith (drill press with stop would also work) so that a magnet would be just flush. After several test on the scrap piece you can then hit the hatch. You must use a forstner bit also. My scrap piece was not glassed so the glassed hatch stood higher thus the hole was just a tad deeper than flush.
