It might be easier if you tie a rope near one end of each of the sticks. Avoid gluing the rope to anything. Let the free end of the rope be long enough so you can grab it from the cockpit. When the deck is in place, a sharp tug on the rope should dislodge the stick, and you can fish it out fast, too.
