Another approach to consider is if the top and bottom are the same width, but you are unable to pull them together, is to use a rachet with webb belt. Wrap the belt aroud the two sections and rachet them together and tape them.

You can pick up a rachet and belt at Sears or some place like that. I used the technique with great success. You may have to still spread one piece as suggested in another respoonse.
