I have built a Cape Charles at 16 ft. I believe the model lacks volume in the bow for surfing without broaching.

A better option would be the chesapeake 17, or even 16, perhaps the light version. However, go to the clc site and there is a comparison grid with their own use estimates. It is very accurate. By the way, a second version of my c.charles at 16.8 ft was clocked over a 3 miles course on flat water at 5.98 knots. I would not worry to buy a patuxent only for speed.
