I've got a Patuxent 17.5. It's a great boat for day trips and paddling on calm water. Its is fast, tacks well and is a little bit tippy, but nothing that an experienced paddler shouldn't be able to handle. It's OK for paddling in ocean waves but I wouldn't try to surf in breaking waves with it. I think the low bow volume and skeg effect of the stern would make it broach very easily.
