Yes, I agree. Remember there will be a great range of color for each species of cedar from the very light colored outer sap wood, to the darker colored inner heart wood.

I've found dark western red cedar heartwood that looked similar to walnut and mahogany in color.

If you want a really dark WRC color look at the butt ends at the lumberyard and pull pieces that look like a chocolate bar.
